About Universal Modder

An open-source AI-driven game modding toolkit built for autonomous engineering assistants.

Last updated: 2026-04-12

What is Universal Modder?

Universal Modder is a community-driven, 100% free and open-source toolkit designed to bridge modern AI coding assistants (such as Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, and Gemini CLI) with PC game modding ecosystems.

Historically, modding has required intricate knowledge of disassemblers (Ghidra, IDA Pro, dnSpy), reverse-engineered file container formats, memory hooks, and manual graphic editing. Universal Modder empowers autonomous AI agents to perform the heavy lifting: engine reconnaissance, dynamic symbol dumping, generative asset synthesis, and automated test loops within single-player sandboxes.

Core Mission & Architectural Principles

Our project is governed by four foundational commitments:

  1. 100% Free & Open Source (MIT License) Universal Modder is entirely free software. There are no platform subscriptions, locked features, paywalled guides, or telemetry monetisation.
  2. Strict Offline Singleplayer Safety We enforce strict anti-cheat boundaries. Universal Modder strictly prohibits modifying online multiplayer games or circumventing anti-cheat technologies (BattlEye, Easy Anti-Cheat, VAC, Vanguard). Our tools operate strictly within local, offline sandbox environments to safeguard player accounts.
  3. Agent-Native Engineering Rather than requiring fragile manual clicking, every capability is exposed as a composable CLI command or Model Context Protocol (MCP) tool that AI coding assistants can discover, reason over, and execute deterministically.
  4. Reproducible Knowledge Sharing Every successful mod generates transparent field notes containing binary offsets, compiler arguments, and hook definitions, expanding an open knowledge base accessible to all developers.

Supported Game Engines

Universal Modder supports major commercial and proprietary game architectures, including:

  • Unity Engine: Mono and IL2CPP runtimes via Harmony detours and BepInEx loaders.
  • Unreal Engine (UE4 & UE5): Dynamic Lua and C++ injection via UE4SS and .pak asset overrides.
  • .NET / XNA / FNA: MonoMod and framework-specific loaders (tModLoader, SMAPI).
  • Source 1 & 2: VPK virtual filesystem packing and console configuration detours.
  • Bethesda Creation Engine: Papyrus scripting, plugin masters (.esm/.esp), and address libraries.
  • Classic RTS & Native Engines: Genie Engine (.dat struct manipulation), custom DirectX/Vulkan game loops.
