The Offline Sandbox Protocol: Why Universal Modder Enforces Strict Anti-Cheat Boundaries
Our technical manifesto on ethical game modding: how Universal Modder detects kernel anti-cheat drivers, enforces zero-network execution, and protects player accounts from bans.
The line between game modding and illicit game modification has blurred in the modern era of kernel-level anti-cheat engines (such as Easy Anti-Cheat, BattlEye, and Riot Vanguard). While modding enriches gaming culture, unauthorized memory hooks in competitive multiplayer environments ruin the experience for others and risk permanent hardware ID bans.
At Universal Modder, our architectural design is guided by an unwavering principle: Modding belongs exclusively to single-player, offline sandboxes.
This document outlines the security controls, detection routines, and safety mechanisms embedded into Universal Modder.
1. Automated Kernel Anti-Cheat Detection
Before executing any dynamic analysis or process memory attachment, Universal Modder scans active drivers and running services for known anti-cheat systems:
| Anti-Cheat System | Detection Driver Signature | Enforcement Action |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| BattlEye | BEDaisy.sys, BEService.exe | Strict abort; requires -nobattleye or offline mode flag |
| Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) | EasyAntiCheat_EOS.sys, EasyAntiCheat.exe | Halts execution until offline executable target is confirmed |
| Valve Anti-Cheat (VAC) | Steam client API hooked state | Injects -insecure launch argument to isolate from VAC servers |
| Riot Vanguard | vgk.sys | Hard block. Universal Modder refuses execution on protected games |
If a competitive online service is detected without an explicit offline flag, the CLI terminates immediately:
[SAFETY EXCEPTION] Active Anti-Cheat driver detected: BEDaisy.sys
Execution halted to protect user account.
Please launch the game in official offline / single-player mode.
2. Zero-Network Sandbox Quarantine
When launching a game instance for automated agent testing, Universal Modder isolates the child process from all external networks:
- Socket Hooking: Native network APIs (
connect, send,WSASend) are redirected to mock loopback interfaces or closed. - Firewall Isolation: Spawns processes inside an isolated Windows AppContainer or platform-level sandbox preventing egress traffic.
- Zero Telemetry: Disables telemetry beacons and cloud save synchronization during test runs to prevent accidental desynchronization.
3. Save Game Protection & Rollback Guarantees
Mod experimentation inevitably introduces corrupt save states. Universal Modder guarantees user data safety through an automated snapshotting engine:
- Atomic Pre-Mod Snapshots: Before any file is modified or memory hook injected, the user's game directory and local save folder are hashed and backed up to
.um/backups/<game-id>/<timestamp>. - Instant Rollback: If a crash or file corruption occurs, the agent runs
um rollbackto restore pristine game states in under two seconds.
4. Ethical Modding & Copyright Respect
Universal Modder does not distribute copyrighted game assets, decompiled proprietary code, or DRM circumvention cracks:
- All modding tools operate locally against legitimately purchased, user-owned game installations.
- Asset synthesis is handled via AI models or user-provided resources, creating original content rather than redistributing publisher IP.
- Mods are packaged as delta patches (diffs, Harmony detours, or lua overrides) rather than full game binaries.
Conclusion
By treating security, account safety, and ethical boundaries as non-negotiable core primitives, Universal Modder provides a safe playground for developers and gamers to explore AI-driven creativity. Read our About Page to learn more about our open-source philosophy!
